Barling Magna Wildlife Reserve
Barling Magna Wildlife Reserve is in the small village of Barling Magna set alongside the River Roach to the northeast of Southend-on-Sea. The Reserve is managed by Barling Magna Parish Council and maintained by local volunteers; it is open to the public every day of the year. Described as the hidden gem in Essex, at 12 acres the site, which was once part of a defunct sewage farm, has been transformed by the dedicated volunteers into a sanctuary for wildlife and a perfect retreat for visitors. There is a mixture of habitats with meandering paths passing through tree lined walks. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching from strategically placed hides and bird watching stations, observe insects and small mammals in the wildflower meadows, or relax by the pond with the aquatic life.
Exploring the reserve
The reserve features several walking trails that meander through lush landscapes, whether you wish for a gentle stroll or a more invigorating walk there is a trail for you. Whilst walking around you will come across the restored building known as ‘Trumpions Barn’, this leads to a copse of Silver Birch and Rowan with spring flowering bulbs and flowers. Following this path, you will arrive at the side of the Trumpions Bird Hide. After crossing the bridge, you will be in the open meadow. This then leads you to a picnic bench and various paths through and around the meadow where you will see two wooden bridges. You have now reached the pond area; this has benches for taking a well-earned break. Whilst parts of the trail can become muddy and overgrown, it remains a popular route for those seeking a peaceful outdoor experience.
The main path from the car park to Trumpions Barn is firm and constructed from scalping’s, it is suitable for wheelchair use however, it may be bumpy in places. The remaining pathways are grass cut.
